October Illustrations

The dimly lit forest of paintings I've created over the past few years. Dried leaves, tarnished stars and the characters who seek them out.

Almost done with my Halloween commission sketches.  Most of them were from old friends from my hometown, but some were for folks I’ve never met, which is always fun to do.  This one, was for an old friend who loves pumpkins..  watercolor and ink on paper. 8”x10”

“Old Lady Salem” watercolor and ink on paper. 8”x10” Halloween commission sketch.  I got more of the orders than I expected.  And sadly, nobody’s requested anything really scary…  I was hoping for more zombies and gore, but it’s my job, so witches and dolls will have to do for now.

“Velveteen Heart” watercolor and ink on paper. 8”x10”.  Got another quick Halloween commission sketch finished last night for an old friend from high-school.  I haven’t done anything like this, well, since I was in high-school.

THE SPIDER AND THE FLY: 18”x24” oil and pencil on paper.  This is a rough draft of what, in the end, will be a darker approach to “The Spider and the Fly”. I like this, but it’s not what I was going for.

Sometimes, I take a break from actual artwork and do something a little more fun.  Voorhees was my hero as a kid.

“Green Halo” oil on canvas. 24”x48” 2009
The first in a series of absinthe ‘ads’ I want to do.  Still haven’t made it to the second one yet.

“A Moon Meeting” pastel and colored pencil on paper. 12”x18” 2003
I was commissioned by Chapel Hill Pediatric Psychology to do five illustrations for their new offices a while back and this is the first one I finished.  They’re all fairly simple pieces, but they worked really well as a set and I was just honored to have had the opportunity to do this for them.  Still one of my favorite art/work experiences ever.

“Where the Sleigh Bed Goes” oil, colored pencil and pastel on paper. 16”x20” 2009
This was a fairly quick piece I did a few years back.  Another rough drawing that just kept going and going and going…

“A Leaf Lesson” colored pencil and charcoal on paper. 12”x18” 2009
I did this at an illustrator meet-and-greet a few years ago at a Barnes and Noble.  There was a little boy, looked like he was 6 or 7 who stood there the entire time I worked on this.  He was silent the entire time.  Until I was finished and signed it.
“Whaddya think, man?”
“I hope I’m that good when I get old.”  (walks away)
